Aer Lingus has officially entered the low-earth orbit era of passenger experience, launching its first Starlink-equipped aircraft today. The move marks a significant upgrade in the airline’s connectivity offering, promising at-home internet speeds at 35,000 feet.
The inaugural high-speed flight took place today on flight EI105 from Dublin to New York JFK. Passengers across all cabins were the first to trial the service, which allows for seamless streaming, gaming, and real-time remote working without the traditional lag associated with legacy satellite systems.
The first aircraft to receive the hardware is an Airbus A330-300, registration EI-EIN. Following successful installation and rigorous testing, the widebody jet now serves as the pioneer for a fleet-wide rollout.
By utilising SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, which consists of over 10,000 satellites in Low Earth Orbit at approximately 550km, Aer Lingus can offer low-latency connectivity. For the speed-hungry traveller, this translates to download speeds of up to 500+ Mbps.
Fleet Rollout and 90th Anniversary
The Irish flag carrier isn’t stopping with a single jet. Aer Lingus has confirmed a phased rollout programme:
- Initial Focus: North American long-haul routes.
- Next Phase: Short-haul European destinations.
- Target Completion: Entire long-haul fleet expected to be equipped by Q1 2027.
Lynne Embleton, Chief Executive Officer of Aer Lingus, hailed the launch as a milestone during the airline’s 90th year: “Introducing Starlink on our first aircraft is a big moment for us in Aer Lingus. It means our customers can browse, download and stream at speeds as fast as, or quicker than, they’d get at home. This level of connectivity is a real gamechanger. It gives our customers more freedom in how they spend their time on board and it helps our crews and teams work more efficiently.”
This upgrade is the latest in a string of digital investments for the airline, following recent overhauls of the Aer Lingus mobile app and the introduction of Express Bag Drop kiosks. As the airline celebrates nine decades of flying, the shift towards gate-to-gate high-speed internet signals a clear intent to remain competitive in the increasingly tech-driven transatlantic market.
For passengers looking to test the speeds themselves, Aer Lingus has updated its website with a dedicated Starlink Wi-Fi section to track the rollout.
