Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus (EI/EIN) has confirmed it is ceasing long-haul operations from Manchester Airport (MAN/EGCC)from the 31st of March 2026, with the New York service ending earlier in late February.

The transatlantic flights to New York, Orlando and Barbados are operated by Aer Lingus UK (EH/EUK), a wholly owned subsidiary of Aer Lingus which was set up specifically for the Manchester long-haul operations.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the airline said: “A decision has been taken to cease Aer Lingus’ Manchester transatlantic operations as of and from 31st of March 2026. Manchester-New York operations will cease from 23rd of February 2026.

“Aer Lingus plans to operate a service from Dublin to Barbados (subject to receipt of necessary approvals) during the months of April and May to re-accommodate affected customers.

“We understand that this is disappointing news and apologise for the disruption to our customers.

“All impacted customers are being informed of the cancellation of flights directly and provided with reaccommodation and refund options.”

Passengers who have booked on these flights beyond the 31st of March 2026 must be accommodated by Aer Lingus under EU regulations by way of alternative flights, even with another carrier but it seems Aer Lingus is only offering an alternative route via Dublin leaving passengers facing hours of additional travel or opting for a refund.

The alternative flight request comes under the “comparable transport conditions” which sets out an airlines obligations.

These are:

  • Extraordinary Circumstances: Even in cases of extraordinary circumstances (e.g., severe weather), passengers are still entitled to care and re-routing.
  • Re-routing Options: Airlines must offer alternatives, which may include using another airline, alternative routes, or different airports to ensure prompt travel.
  • Definition: “Comparable” generally refers to similar routing, class of service, and travel time.
  • Alternative Timing: If the next available flight is not until the following day, the airline must provide hotel accommodation and transport.
  • Refusal Rights: If an airline offers a flight with similar conditions to the final destination, but the passenger chooses a different, non-comparable flight, they may lose their right to compensation.

Rival carrier Virgin Atlantic VS/VIR) offers direct flights from Manchester to New York and Orlando and it is possible passengers could insist Aer Lingus rebooks them on to these direct flights however Aer Lingus is arguing that offering a flight via Dublin fulfils their obligations.

Around 200 jobs, mainly cabin crew, are expected to be made redundant by the airline when its Manchester base closes and the Unite Union recently started balloting staff on industrial action.

Aer Lingus’ regional operation from Manchester Airport is not affected by the long-haul base closure.
