Brazilian manufacturer Embraer has secured the 2026 Aviation Week Program Excellence Award in the OEM category, recognising the success of its E-Freighter programme and its impact on the global air cargo market.
The accolade, presented by Aviation Week Network, celebrates programmes that demonstrate outstanding performance beyond technical milestones, highlighting innovation, execution, and strong programme management. Embraer’s win reflects the rapid development and delivery of its E190F freighter, which has been positioned as a key solution for evolving cargo demands.
Speaking on the achievement, Marcelo Tocci, Program Director for Commercial Aviation at Embraer, described the E-Freighter initiative as a “new frontier” for both the company and the wider logistics sector. He noted that in just 29 months, Embraer and its global partners successfully converted the established E-Jet platform into a fully certified freighter tailored to modern cargo requirements. Tocci added that the aircraft’s payload capability, range, and turnaround efficiency would enable operators to connect smaller cities, open new routes, and improve overall network flexibility.
The E190F programme was launched in response to the rapid growth of e-commerce and shifting trade patterns, which increasingly rely on decentralised distribution networks and faster delivery times. Embraer identified a gap in the market for mid-sized freighters capable of serving secondary and tertiary markets, while also replacing ageing and less efficient aircraft types.
Converted E-Jets offer a significant performance improvement over traditional cargo aircraft in this segment. According to Embraer, the freighter variant provides more than 40 per cent greater volume capacity than comparable aircraft, along with up to three times the range of large cargo turboprops. Operating economics are also improved, with costs up to 30 per cent lower than larger narrowbody freighters.
With a maximum structural payload of 13,500kg when combining main deck and underfloor capacity, the E190F is designed to offer a balanced mix of efficiency and capability. The programme’s recognition by Aviation Week underscores its potential to reshape regional cargo operations as demand for flexible and sustainable logistics solutions continues to grow.
