ACIA Aero Leasing has delivered a third ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft to PNG Air, further strengthening the Papua New Guinean carrier’s domestic fleet.

The regional aircraft leasing specialist confirmed that the latest turboprop has been placed on lease with PNG Air, marking another milestone in the growing relationship between the two companies. The delivery forms part of the airline’s wider fleet renewal and expansion strategy aimed at enhancing connectivity across Papua New Guinea’s challenging and geographically diverse landscape.

Mick Mooney, Chief Executive Officer of Dublin, Ireland based ACIA Aero Leasing, said the company was pleased to deepen its partnership with the airline.

“We are delighted to partner with PNG Air in expanding its fleet, having now delivered three ATR 72-600s. PNG Air plays a critical role in providing regional connectivity and essential domestic services across Papua New Guinea. The ATR’s proven efficiency and economics make it the ideal aircraft for connecting the country’s remote communities. We look forward to a long partnership with PNG Air as it strengthens its domestic network and builds for the future,” he said.

The ATR 72-600 is widely regarded as one of the most efficient aircraft in the regional turboprop segment, offering lower fuel burn and operating costs compared with similarly sized jets. Its performance characteristics make it particularly well suited to short runways and remote airstrips, key considerations in Papua New Guinea where air travel is often the primary means of transport between communities.

Brian Fraser, Chief Executive Officer of PNG Air, described the fleet investment as a pivotal step in the airline’s long-term strategy.

“This fleet investment represents a pivotal step in the execution of PNG Air’s three-year strategic plan. The ATR 72-600 offers proven efficiency, reliability, and capacity, which are essential as we streamline our fleet, improve operational performance, and position the airline for sustainable growth. Partnering with ACIA Aero Leasing enables us to accelerate our transition to a modern, single-type fleet that not only enhances the customer experience but also delivers long-term value for our shareholders and stakeholders across Papua New Guinea,” he said.

The addition of the third ATR 72-600 underlines PNG Air’s commitment to modernising its fleet around a single aircraft type, a move expected to deliver operational efficiencies, simplified maintenance and training, and improved reliability for passengers.

For ACIA Aero Leasing, the delivery highlights continued demand for modern regional turboprops as airlines seek cost-effective and environmentally efficient solutions to serve thinner domestic and regional routes.
