British Airways outlines major long-haul expansion for winter 2026

British Airways has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of its long-haul network for winter 2026, including the launch of two new destinations and increased frequencies across a range of established routes.

The airline’s long-haul route network is set to grow by around nine per cent, reflecting continued investment in leisure-focused travel and broader customer choice. Central to the expansion are new services to Melbourne and Colombo.

Flights to Melbourne will commence on 9 January 2027 from London Heathrow, operating daily via Kuala Lumpur. The route is timed to coincide with major events including the Australian Open and the Melbourne Grand Prix, and will run year-round. Meanwhile, Colombo will join the network from 23 October 2026, with a three-times-weekly winter service from London Gatwick, providing direct access to Sri Lanka’s capital and wider Indian Ocean region.

Alongside the new routes, British Airways is boosting capacity on several high-demand leisure destinations. Services to Cape Town will increase to three flights per day from Heathrow during December, while flights to Tokyo (Haneda) will operate twice daily throughout the winter season. In the Caribbean, the airline is introducing a new daily Gatwick–Bridgetown service from 25 October, complementing existing Heathrow operations and offering onward connections to Grenada, Guyana and Tobago.

Further Caribbean growth includes increased services to Kingston and Punta Cana, both rising to four weekly flights, while Saint Lucia will see dedicated daily services. Elsewhere, San José will increase to five weekly flights and transfer to Heathrow operations.

Expansion also extends to North America and Asia, with increased frequencies to cities including New Orleans, Baltimore and Houston. In India, Delhi will retain its three-times-daily schedule introduced earlier in 2026, while services to Abu Dhabi are set to resume daily for the winter season.

The airline has also responded to short-term demand shifts linked to the ongoing situation in the Middle East. Additional flights have been added to Bangkok and Singapore, with seven extra return services operated recently and more than 3,300 additional seats made available between 10 and 19 March. At the same time, flights to destinations including Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, Doha and Tel Aviv remain temporarily reduced or suspended into spring.

Data from British Airways Holidays highlights a notable shift in customer demand, with travellers increasingly seeking alternative leisure destinations. Searches for Caribbean holidays have risen sharply, including significant growth for Antigua and Barbados, while interest in Indian Ocean destinations such as the Maldives and Mauritius has also increased. Closer to home, the Canary Islands continue to perform strongly, with Tenerife and Gran Canaria both seeing notable rises in search activity.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said the expansion represents a “significant investment” in the airline’s long-haul leisure network, adding more options for customers while retaining flexibility to respond to changing demand.

Overall, the airline reports strong demand across its network, with flight searches from the UK to the Caribbean, South West Pacific and South Asia up by 40 per cent, and short-notice bookings for travel within two weeks rising by 155 per cent.
