British Airways has marked a significant milestone in onboard connectivity, with its first aircraft equipped with Starlinktaking to the skies today. The inaugural flight, operated by a Boeing 787-8 bound for Houston, is the first time a UK airline has deployed the high-speed satellite internet service.
The newly connected aircraft introduces free, high-speed Wi-Fi for customers across all cabins, enabling passengers to stream content, work remotely and stay in touch throughout their journey. Powered by a network of more than 10,000 low-Earth orbit satellites, the system is designed to provide faster and more reliable connectivity than traditional inflight Wi-Fi, with download speeds of up to 500 Mbps.
The airline has already begun rolling out the technology across its Boeing 787-8 fleet, with additional aircraft currently undergoing installation. British Airways plans to equip its entire fleet of more than 300 aircraft with Starlink within the next two years, making the service available free of charge to all passengers.
Sean Doyle, Chairman and Chief Executive of British Airways, described the development as “a landmark moment” for the carrier. He said the introduction of Starlink reflects the airline’s commitment to improving the customer experience, noting that reliable onboard connectivity is increasingly important for both business and leisure travellers.
Beyond passenger benefits, the enhanced connectivity will also support operational improvements. Cabin crew and flight crew will be able to communicate in real time with teams on the ground, improving efficiency and responsiveness during flights.
The rollout forms part of British Airways’ wider £7 billion transformation programme, which includes investment in new lounge concepts at key hubs such as Dubai and Miami, as well as the adoption of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve punctuality and overall service delivery.
