Bristol Airport has unveiled ambitious long-term proposals aimed at expanding capacity, enhancing passenger experience and supporting regional growth, as it sets out its vision for the future.
The South West gateway confirmed plans that could see significant investment in infrastructure, including terminal expansion, improved transport links and the potential introduction of long-haul services.
The proposals form part of the airport’s wider masterplan, which looks ahead to growth through to the late 2030s and beyond. Central to the plans is an increase in passenger capacity to around 15 million per year, up from current levels of just over 10 million, alongside a rise in aircraft movements.
A key element of the strategy is the extension of the runway, enabling operations by larger aircraft and opening the door to long-haul routes for the first time in more than a decade. Destinations in North America, the Middle East and Asia are all being considered as part of the expansion.
To support this growth, the airport is proposing a major upgrade of its terminal facilities. Plans include expanded immigration and baggage handling areas, additional retail and dining options, and improvements designed to streamline the passenger journey, such as the ability to board aircraft directly from the terminal.
Surface access and infrastructure improvements also feature prominently, with enhancements to public transport links and road access intended to improve connectivity to the airport. These developments build on recent investments, including a new public transport interchange and ongoing terminal transformation works.
Speaking about the plans, Dave Lees, Chief Executive of Bristol Airport, said: “We have set out our vision for the future of Bristol Airport to ensure it continues to provide the connectivity our region needs, while delivering the best possible experience for our customers.
“These plans will enable us to meet growing demand for air travel across the South West and support thousands of jobs, while continuing to invest in sustainable operations and reducing our environmental impact.”
Adding: “We know how important Bristol Airport is to the regional economy and these proposals will help secure its long-term future, ensuring it remains competitive and capable of serving a wider range of destinations, including potential long-haul routes.”
In parallel with expansion, the airport continues to pursue its sustainability goals, including its commitment to achieve net zero operations by 2030, supported by initiatives such as a new low-carbon energy centre and enhanced environmental programmes.
The plans will likely face opposition from local campaign groups who have, largely unsuccessfully, tried to block expansion at the West Country hub at every stage but the wider economic benefits to the region are likely to outweigh those concerns.
The proposals will now be subject to further consultation and will be submitted to local authorities for consideration, as the airport seeks to balance future growth with environmental and community priorities.
If approved, the plans would mark one of the most significant developments in the airport’s history, positioning it to play a greater role in the UK’s aviation network and reconnect the region with long-haul destinations worldwide.
