A major incident has been declared near RAF Fairford with specialist explosive units examining multiple vehicles following arrests under the Explosives Act.
The incident is taking place in Whelford, which is at the eastern end of the air base that is currently being used for bomber operations in the Iran conflict by the US Air Force.
In a statement, Gloucestershire Police said: “A number of properties are currently being evacuated in the Whelford area following the declaration of a major incident.
“It follows the arrest of several men on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.
“We are working closely with our partners and are enacting the well-rehearsed plans we have in place.”
As well as Army bomb disposal teams there is also a Hazardous Area Response Team at the location but the investigation is now being led by specialist counter-terrorism police.
The US Air Force said it was aware of the incident. A spokesperson added: “The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families”
RAF Fairford is used solely by the US Air Force and is their only forward operation location for heavy bombers including B52s and the B1-B, both of which are currently deployed to the base.
Prime minister Andy Burnham said he was being updated on the ongoing situation adding: “We are grateful to the emergency services, who have acted quickly to detain several suspects and put measures in place to keep the community safe.
“It would be inappropriate to comment further whilst investigations are ongoing.”
