Ukrainian drone manufacturer Ukrspecsystems has announced an investment of £200 million into the East Anglia region of the UK by creating a new production facility and test site in Suffolk creating hundreds of highly-skilled jobs.
The news will come as a relief to the region following the recent decision by Lotus to cut 550 workers in neighbouring Norfolk with many of the skills transferable.
The investment will see Ukrspecsystems utilise an 11,000m2 factory at Mildenhall along with a new testing site at Elmsett, both in Suffolk.
Drone production at the site is expected to begin in 2026 with workers starting to be employed later this year.
The company also has ambitions to expand to further sites in the region as well as offering apprenticeships to build the next generation of skilled workers.
Rory Chamberlain, Managing Director UK, Ukrspecsystems said: “Ukrspecsystems is proud to be the first Ukrainian company to commit to a funded plan to invest in infrastructure, jobs and skills in the UK. Our factory at Mildenhall and flight test and training facility at Elmsett are testament to this commitment.
“Our unmatched battle winning technology and know-how, coupled with UK aviation and industrial expertise, will enable Ukrspecsystems to become the global leader in uncrewed systems in both the civil and military sectors, and establish the UK as a launch pad for export markets.”
Rt Hon Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, added: “We stand united with Ukraine and we recognise its world-leading drone capabilities. By collaborating with Ukrainian companies like Ukrspecsystems we will benefit from access to cutting-edge designs and innovative technologies, strengthening the UK’s Armed Forces and those of our partners.
“This £200 million investment will also improve our industrial base and create up to 500 jobs, driving economic growth and prosperity around the country – core elements of our upcoming Defence Industrial Strategy.”
Ukrspecsystems will be exhibiting at the upcoming DSEI UK event, which takes place from the 9th to 12th of September at Excel London, where it expects to make further investment announcements in the UK. The event is Europe’s leading defence and security industry event.
