Three escape with minor injuries from A40 plane crash

Three people escaped with apparently minor injuries after a light aircraft came down and burst into flames on the A40 between Raglan and Abergavenny.

South Wales Fire and Rescue said they were called to reports of an aircraft crash at 11:03 this morning and that crews from Abergavenny, Blaenavon & Malpas attended the scene and extinguished the fire using 2 hose reels, foam & 4 breathing apparatus

It confirmed that the three occupants were assisted to safety by passers by and the treated at the scene before being taken to hospital as a precaution.

The aircraft also hit power lines close to a nearby railway line causing a train to execute an emergency stop.

Its the second time in a two years that a light aircraft has crash landed on the A40 near Raglan. In June 2016 A Piper PA28 (G-SVEA) crashed on the road also injuring three people.

The A40 is likely to remain shut for some time whilst recovery and investigation work is carried out.
