Managers at London Gatwick Airport (LGW/EGKK) will be breathing a sigh of relief after the Unite union called off planned strikes for later this month by baggage screeners was called off.

The union called off the strikes after receiving a revised pay offer by ICTS, which employs the baggage screeners, who Unite says are among the lowest-paid staff at the airport.

Unite will now ballot members on the new pay offer, but warns that if it is rejected, the 2nd strike planned for the end of August could still go ahead.

Unite’s regional officer Ben Davis said: “Following an improved offer from ICTS, Unite has suspended strikes in order to ballot its members.

The planned industrial action could have affected hundreds of flights each day, causing delays, cancellations and misery for passengers looking to get away for a late summer holiday.
