Cornwall Airport Newquay has officially opened its state-of-the-art security facilities, becoming one of the first regional airports in the UK to fully deploy next-generation CT X-ray screening technology. The upgrade marks a major milestone in both aviation innovation and the passenger experience, with Cornwall now setting a new benchmark for regional air travel.
The newly installed scanners allow passengers to keep liquids and electronics inside their bags, eliminating the need for separate plastic liquid bags and streamlining the entire security process. Capable of processing up to 500 passengers per hour, the system delivers a fast and seamless experience that rivals those found at major international airports.
Amy Smith, Interim Managing Director of Cornwall Airport Newquay, said: “This is not just a new scanner – it’s a new standard. We’re investing in the future of regional air travel by delivering cutting-edge infrastructure that puts Cornwall ahead of the curve and right at the heart of global connectivity.”
“This upgrade unlocks streamlined travel for local businesses, strengthens ties to key UK and European markets, and makes it even easier for visitors to experience everything Cornwall has to offer. It’s a major step forward in making Cornwall more competitive, and more confident on the national and international stage,” she added.
The security overhaul is part of a broader transformation at the airport, which is increasingly positioning itself as an innovation hub for the South West. Recent upgrades have included improvements to the terminal shop and café, showcasing local Cornish producers, and the installation of high-speed WiFi in collaboration with Wildanet, a local internet provider. Future developments include the introduction of electric ground operations and enhanced digital booking systems.
The official ribbon-cutting will be carried out by Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall, alongside airport leadership and representatives from the local business, tourism, and transport sectors. The event also welcomes Airport Capacity Solutions, the firm that delivered the new security system from start to finish.
The timing of the upgrade comes as the Department for Transport begins to ease long-standing restrictions on liquid volumes in hand luggage. Under the new rules, limits will rise from 100ml to 2 litres at eligible airports. Cornwall Airport Newquay’s advanced technology means it is fully equipped to meet these changes as soon as they are formally approved.
The airport’s investment signals its ambition to serve as more than just a gateway for Cornwall, but as a driving force for economic growth, innovation and improved regional accessibility.
