Malaysia Aviation Group, which owns Malaysia Airlines, has placed a form order for 20 more Airbus A330-900 widebody airliners with European OEM Airbus.
The order doubles the groups original order of which four have been delivered bringing the total backlog of the type for Malaysia Airlines to 36 as part of its fleet renewal programme.
Malaysia Aviation Group signed the deal during an official visit by Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim.
“The A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range, and cabin comfort to support our network and growth strategy,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group.
“With its enhanced fuel efficiency and flexibility across both regional and long-haul routes, the aircraft is a strong fit for our evolving market needs. It also allows us to offer a product that aligns with our premium positioning – streamlined, modern, and designed around passenger comfort and expectations. This additional order reinforces our long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, delivers consistent value to our passengers, and strengthens our competitiveness in key markets.”
The Airbus A330-900 is a modern wide-body twin-engine jet and part of the A330neo (New Engine Option) family. It features advanced Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, improved aerodynamics with new Sharklet wingtips, and upgraded cabin comfort.
It is designed for long-haul efficiency, it can carry around 260–300 passengers in a typical three-class layout with a range of up to 13,334 km (7,200 nautical miles). The A330-900 offers airlines reduced fuel burn and operating costs compared to older models, making it a popular choice for medium- to long-haul routes.
“We are proud to further strengthen our relationship with Malaysia Aviation Group as it expands its A330neo fleet,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. “This repeat order is a strong endorsement of the A330neo’s exceptional performance, fuel efficiency, versatility and passenger comfort, as well as a testament to the aircraft’s popularity among the world’s premium airlines.”
