Ethiopian converts Boeing 787-9 options to firm orders

Ethiopian Airlines has converted six options for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to firm orders following a deal signed in Arlington, Virginia.

The options were part of a landmark deal signed in 2023 which saw the African airliner order 11 Dreamliners and 26 737 Max sing-aisle airliners with 36 options.

The airline plans to use the new aircraft to expand its long-haul network from its home hub of Addis Ababa.

“Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew. “The order shows Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements. By growing our fleet size with ultra-modern airplanes such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are further maintaining operational excellence and passengers’ comfort.”

Ethiopian already operates the largest 787 Dreamliner fleet in Africa utilising both the -8 and -9 variants.and its versatility and lower fuel consumption allows the airliner to operate it on both long-haul flights and high density European routes.
