The chairman of Cardiff Airport, Roger Lewis, is to stand down according to a tweet by Wales’ Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates but not before extending his tenure until May 2020.
In the tweet Mr Skates said “Grateful to Roger Lewis for agreeing to stay on as Chair of @Cardiff_Airport until the new Chair takes up position in May 2020.”
Mr Lewis has been credited with helping to bring Qatar Airways to Cardiff Airport as well as stimulate growth at Wales’ only airport but Cardiff Airport is facing a difficult period.
Cardiff’s biggest airline Flybe is closing its jet base at the airport at the end of October and will leave the airport with a fraction of the flights it has been operating.
In addition the collapse of Thomas Cook will cut around 85,000 seats from the summer season at the airport.
On the flipside, The airport has attracted Loganair into launching a route between Cardiff and Glasgow.
The tweet by Ken Skates has since been deleted but a spokesperson for the Welsh Government said this was due to a “slight mix-up with timings”.
