Libya’s first private airline, Buraq Air, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to acquire 10 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft, marking the carrier’s first purchase agreement with the European manufacturer. The deal, announced at the Dubai Airshow, positions Buraq Air as a new Airbus customer as it looks to modernise its fleet and expand its network.

The agreement was formalised by Fouzi Almiqalh, General Assembly President of Buraq Air, and Benoit de Saint Exupery, Airbus’ Executive Vice President Sales for Commercial Aircraft.

Almiqalh said the signing represented a major milestone for the Tripoli-based airline: “This agreement represents a significant step forward for Buraq Air as we continue to modernise our fleet and serve more destinations. The A320neo’s efficiency and flexibility will not only be central to strengthening our core network but will also provide a seamless platform for Medsky Airways, our key strategic partner, to jointly enhance passenger offering across both our carriers.”

Airbus echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of the new partnership. “We are delighted to welcome Buraq Air as a new Airbus customer of the A320 Family, and we thank them for their confidence,” said de Saint Exupery. “This agreement reinforces the A320neo as the aircraft of choice for fleet modernisation, and we are dedicated to supporting Buraq Air’s strategic expansion plan.”

The A320 Family remains the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft, with more than 19,000 total orders and over 11,300 specifically for the A320neo variants from 150 customers worldwide. The latest-generation models offer at least 20% reductions in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared with previous single-aisle types, along with one of the widest cabins in their class.

All Airbus aircraft, including the A320neo Family, can currently operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with the manufacturer targeting 100% SAF capability across its fleet by 2030.

The new aircraft will support Buraq Air’s ambitions to strengthen connectivity within Libya and beyond, while deepening cooperation with partner airline Medsky Airways.
