Budget airline giant Ryanair is implementing a major policy change, transitioning to an entirely digital boarding pass system for all passengers, effective Wednesday, November 12, 2025. This means that the option to download and print a physical paper boarding pass will be scrapped for most flights.
The shift is part of the airline’s digital transformation strategy, aiming for a “faster, smarter, and greener travel experience.” Ryanair says the move is environmentally conscious, as it will eliminate hundreds of tonnes of paper waste annually.
What You Need to Know:
- The New Rule: From November 12th, all passengers must use the digital boarding pass generated within the “myRyanair” app after checking in online.
- How to Prepare: Travellers should ensure they have the latest version of the myRyanair app downloaded onto their smartphone or tablet before heading to the airport.
- The Benefits: The airline highlights several advantages, including real-time updates on boarding times, gate changes, and delays, as well as improved customer service during flight disruptions.
- The App is Key: While online check-in can still be completed on the Ryanair website, you will be directed to the app to generate and present your digital boarding pass.

What if Your Phone Fails or You Don’t Have a Smartphone?
Ryanair has provided assurances for passengers who may face technical difficulties or do not own a smart device:
- Dead Battery/Lost Phone: If you have already checked in online before arriving at the airport, staff will reissue a paper boarding pass free of charge at the check-in or ticket desk. Your details will be on the system.
- No Smartphone: Passengers without a smartphone or tablet can still check in online beforehand (using a computer, for example) and then request a free paper boarding pass at the check-in desk at the airport. Crucially, you must check in online before arriving to avoid a fee.
- Online Check-In Remains Essential: The existing penalty fees for failing to check in online before arriving at the airport will still apply.
Important Exceptions:
Not all airports are ready for the switch. Passengers flying from Morocco will still be required by local government regulation to present a printed paper boarding pass. You must still check in online and then collect the printed pass at the airport check-in desk.
The airline confirmed that roughly 80% of its passengers already use the digital boarding system, making the transition simpler for the majority of travellers. Ryanair advises all customers to familiarise themselves with the app well in advance of their travel date to ensure a smooth journey.
