Air Canada (AC/ACA) has unveiled the first route that will utilise the Airbus A321XLR, the Extra Long Range version of the single-aisle airliner, and it is between Montreal and Palma de Mallorca.
The Canadian flag carrier is expecting its first A321XLR in early 2026 making it available for the Summer 2026 season on that route.
Following on from its introduction on the Palma route, the A321XLR variant will also be used on the Montreal to Toulouse and Montreal to Edinburgh (EDI/EGPH) routes.
Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer, and President, Cargo at Air Canada said: “The wait is nearly over as the imminent arrival of the game-changing Airbus A321XLR marks the next phase of international growth at Air Canada. This revolutionary narrow-body aircraft unlocks new, exciting global opportunities with its wide-body range and enhanced onboard product. Today, we begin that journey of growth with the announcement of Palma de Mallorca as the first new destination made possible by this fleet.
“By leveraging the unique capabilities of the A321XLR, Air Canada becomes the first Canadian airline to offer flights to this Spanish island, renowned for its stunning beaches, history and culture. We look forward to welcoming our customers aboard this exciting new aircraft, which will join our fleet in the coming months,”
The Airbus A321XLR is the longest-range variant of the A320neo family, designed to offer airlines the capability to operate long-haul routes with the efficiency of a single-aisle aircraft. With a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, it enables direct flights between city pairs that were previously only viable with larger, widebody jets.
Featuring additional fuel tanks, optimised aerodynamics and a redesigned landing gear, the A321XLR provides improved performance while delivering lower fuel burn and emissions, making it a key aircraft for airlines seeking flexibility and sustainability in their fleets.
Air Canada’s A321XLRs will carry 182 passengers in a configuration of 14 Signature Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats and will also mark the introduction of the next generation of Air Canada’s cabin interiors.
