Seventy-one extraordinary children with life-limiting illnesses have today set off on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Orlando, Florida, thanks to the Manchester-based charity Destination Florida and its airline partner, Aer Lingus.

Departing from Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2, the specially arranged flight marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey for children from across the North of England. The biennial trip, organised by Destination Florida, offers these young people joy, adventure and respite at one of the world’s most magical destinations, while giving their families a much-needed break from the challenges of everyday care.

Among the children flying out was 10-year-old Gracie, who lives with multiple complex medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, learning difficulties, and two rare genetic disorders. Gracie is cared for by her grandparents, Sharon and Ian, who she lovingly calls mum and dad. The couple tragically lost their daughter – Gracie’s birth mother – seven years ago to one of the same conditions Gracie has.

Speaking at the airport, Sharon said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Gracie. As a family, we wouldn’t be able to afford a trip like this or manage her needs on our own. Over the past five years, Ian and I have been extremely unwell ourselves, so this trip offers us a rare chance to recharge while Gracie is in safe hands.

“The support from the medical team and volunteers has been incredible. They’ve already made plans to help manage Gracie’s behaviour and care needs during the trip, which gives us complete peace of mind.”

Gracie, who is especially excited about meeting Disney characters and experiencing a pool party and fireworks, is one of many children being accompanied by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and volunteer carers.

Aer Lingus staff have worked closely with Destination Florida in the lead-up to the journey to ensure a warm welcome and a smooth transatlantic flight for all involved. Among the airline’s volunteers is long-serving cabin crew member Sandi Schofield, who has raised £9,000 this year alone to support the trip.

Sandi, who first volunteered with the charity in 2018, said: “Destination Florida holds a very special place in my heart. I’ve seen first-hand the joy and confidence this trip brings to the children – it’s truly life-changing.

“Raising the funds was a labour of love, and being able to welcome these incredible children on board is something I’ll always treasure. It’s not just about flying them to Florida – it’s about making them feel valued and celebrated.”

Ben Morrison, trustee at Destination Florida, praised the ongoing collaboration with Aer Lingus: “Aer Lingus has proven to be a stellar partner. Their thoughtfulness, care and support are exactly what our children and volunteers need when travelling such a distance. We’re grateful for their continued commitment in making these trips possible.

“Having an airline that truly understands and works with us every step of the way is absolutely essential.”
